Client:

Reynolds Journalism Institute

Description:

The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute engages media professionals, scholars and other citizens in programs aimed at strengthening journalism in the service of democracy. RJI generates and tests new techniques and new thinking that promise to improve journalism.

RJI was launched in 2004 with a grant of million from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. RJI’s work crosses diverse specialties within journalism, including media convergence, editorial content and methods, the evolution of advertising, innovation in management and the impact of new technologies. It also includes varied fields on campus such as law, computer science, marketing, education and other disciplines.

Challenge:

RJI needed to build a new site that could simultaneously handle information about the school while also providing ample space for blogs, reader comments, live streaming events, an archive of published reports, a photo gallery and more.

Insights:

Because of the number of custom tools and third-party integrations necessary, selecting a content management system proved challenging.

Solution:

We presented RJI with a very detailed cms assessment listing 110 criteria and corresponding analysis. In addition, we delivered a hidden cost calculator, a cost-benefit analysis and a thorough assessment of nine cms options. We included recommendations and next steps, as well as a list of recommended vendors for RJI's individual project.

Success:

RJI took our recommendations and implemented our suggested cms, tools and systems to relaunch its site.
